Resumo O objeto de estudo se refere às representações da espiritualidade e da religiosidade para mulheres que pertencem às religiões afrodiaspóricas, em específico às que são fiéis da umbanda e do candomblé. Buscou-se analisar a estrutura representacional da espiritualidade e da religiosidade para mulheres umbandistas e candomblecistas com vistas a se pensar um modelo explicativo dessa construção simbólica e as implicações para a prática de cuidado na área da saúde. Estudo qualitativo, à luz das representações sociais em sua abordagem estrutural. Dados coletados com 207 mulheres umbandistas e candomblecistas por meio de evocações livres aos termos indutores espiritualidade e religiosidade, além da caracterização e da escala de religiosidade. As evocações foram submetidas às análises prototípica e de similitude com o Iramuteq, e os dados quantitativos, pela estatística descritiva. Os resultados mostram que os elementos centrais para a religiosidade são fé, crença, Deus e amor, enquanto para espiritualidade, fé, Orixás, Deus, paz e amor. A árvore de similitude explicita a centralidade da fé para a estruturação dessa representação. As representações se organizam ao redor da ideia de relação entre o humano e o divino.

Abstract The object of study refers to the representations of spirituality and religiosity for women who belong to Afro-diasporic religions, specifically those who are faithful to Umbanda and Candomblé. The objective was to analyze the representational structure of spirituality and religiosity for Umbandist and Candomblecist women with the aim of thinking of an explanatory model of this symbolic construction and implications for the practice of care in the area of health. Qualitative study, in the light of Social Representations in its structural approach. Data collected with 207 Umbandist and Candomblecist women through free evocations of the inducing terms “spirituality” and “religiosity”, in addition to the characterization and scale of religiosity. The evocations were submitted to prototypical and similarity analyses with Iramuteq, while quantitative data to descriptive statistics. The results show that the central elements for religiosity are faith, belief, God and love, while for spirituality, they are faith, Orixás, God, peace and love. The tree of similarity explains the centrality of faith for the structuring of this representation. The representations are organized around the idea of a relationship between the human and the divine.

ABSTRACT Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) might present acute and late toxicities and the oral tissues are frequently affected. With the survival increasing, patients show late and long-term morbidities, and there is an important association between the general and the oral health. The first and second parts of this Consensus have showed the importance of the adequacy of oral health in the pre-HSCT, and the main alterations and oral care during the period of admission for HSCT. This third part aims to review specific themes of post-HSCT dental care, such as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and the pediatric patient. It also aims to review pertinent subjects, both during the HSCT period and post-HSCT, concerning quality of life, pain, cost-effectiveness, and remote care. Based on this review, it is evident the importance of the work of the dental surgeon (DS) in the follow-up and treatment of the HSCT patient, always collaborating with the whole multidisciplinary team.

ABSTRACT During the state of immune vulnerability in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), the patient has an increased risk of developing a vast number of complications, including severe problems in the oral cavity. These situations require professional oral care to act in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions, as well as to develop prevention protocols to minimize patient's complications. Oral mucositis, opportunistic infections, bleeding, specific microbiota, taste, and salivary alterations are complications that can occur during HSCT and interfere with various aspects, such as pain control, oral intake, nutrition, bacteremia and sepsis, days of hospitalization and morbidity. Several guidelines have been published to address the role of professional oral care during the HSCT, we describe a consensus regarding these recommendations.

ABSTRACT The oral involvement in the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation is well described in the literature. The goal of the dental treatment and management of the oral lesions related to the HSCT is to reduce the harm caused by preexisting oral infection or even the worsening of oral acute/chronic GVHD and late effects. The aim of this guideline was to discuss the dental management of patients subjected to HSCT, considering three phases of the HSCT: pre-HSCT, acute phase, and late phase. The literature published from 2010 to 2020 was reviewed in order to identify dental interventions in this patient population. The selected papers were divided into three groups: pre-HSCT, acute and late, and were reviewed by the SBTMO Dental Committee's members. When necessary, an expertise opinion was considered for better translating the guideline recommendations to our population dental characteristics. This manuscript focused on the pre-HSCT dental management. The objective of the pre-HSCT dental management is to identify possible dental situations that On behalf of the Dental Committee of the Brazilian Society of Gene Therapy and Bone Marrow Transplantation (SBTMO) can worsening during the acute phase after the HSCT. Each guideline recommendations were made considering the Dentistry Specialties. The clinical consensus on dental management prior to HSCT provides professional health caregivers with clinical setting-specific information to help with the management of dental problems in patients to be subjected to HSCT.

Abstract Objective: To assess the predictive value of selected growth phenotypes for neonatal morbidity and mortality in preterm infants < 30 weeks and to compare them with INTERGROWTH-21st (IG21). Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from the Brazilian Neonatal Research Network (BNRN) database for very low birth weight (VLBW) at 20 public tertiary-care university hospitals. Outcome: the composite neonatal morbidity and mortality (CNMM) consisted of in-hospital death, oxygen use at 36 weeks, intraventricular hemorrhage grade 3 or 4, and Bell stage 2 or 3 necrotizing enterocolitis. Selected growth phenotypes: small-for-gestational-age (SGA) defined as being < 3rd (SGA3) or 10th (SGA10) percentiles of BW, and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) as being > 97th percentile of BW. Stunting as being < 3rd percentile of the length and wasting as being < 3rd percentile of BMI. Single and multiple log-binomial regression models were fitted to estimate the relative risks of CNMM, comparing them to IG21. Results: 4,072 infants were included. The adjusted relative risks of CNMM associated with selected growth phenotypes were (BNRN/IG21): 1.45 (0.92–2.31)/1.60 (1.27–2.02) for SGA; 0.90 (0.55–1.47)/1.05 (0.55–1.99) for LGA; 1.65 (1.08–2.51)/1.58 (1.28–1.96) for stunting; and 1.48 (1.02–2.17) for wasting. Agreement between the two references was variable. The growth phenotypes had good specificity (>95%) and positive predictive value (70-90%), with poor sensitivity and low negative predictive value. Conclusion: The BNRN phenotypes at birth differed markedly from the IG21 standard and showed poor accuracy in predicting adverse neonatal outcomes.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi verde é uma importante alternativa para a geração de emprego e renda para os agricultores familiares, contribuindo para expansão de sua produção e consumo. No entanto, fatores bióticos como insetos, fungos, bactérias, nematoides e vírus têm limitado sua produção, destacando-se os vírus Cowpea Severe Mosaic Virus (CPSMV) e Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV). O controle mais eficiente desses vírus é por meio da utilização de variedades resistentes, porém poucas são as variedades destinadas para a produção de feijão verde que são resistentes. Dessa forma, objetivou-se desenvolver e identificar linhagens superiores de feijão-caupi quanto à resistência simultânea aos vírus CPSMV e CABMV com características associadas à produção de grãos verdes. Foram realizados cruzamentos em casa de vegetação no Instituto Agronômico de Pernambuco-AIP entre os genótipos Sempre Verde Salgueiro (suscetível), CNC-0434 (imune ao CPSMV) e TVu-966 (resistente ao CABMV). A partir dos cruzamentos foram selecionadas 50 linhagens F2:5 com coloração do grão tipo Sempre Verde, sendo avaliada a resistência aos vírus em casa de vegetação e as suas características agronômicas para produção de grãos verdes em experimento na Estação Experimental do AIP em Belém do São Francisco-PE. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados completos, com três repetições. As linhagens L300.026, L300.039, L300.040 e L300.049 mostraram-se resistentes a ambos os vírus e possuem elevado potencial para a produção de grãos verdes; o índice de seleção de Mulamba e Mock facilitou a seleção de linhagens superiores e promissoras para futuro lançamentos de novas variedades resistentes destinadas à produção de grãos verdes.

ABSTRACT Green cowpea is an important alternative for generating employment and income for family farmers and helps broaden production and consumption of the grain. However, biotic factors such as insects, fungi, bacteria, nematodes and viruses have hampered production, especially the Cowpea Severe Mosaic Virus (CPSMV) and Cowpea Aphid-Borne Mosaic Virus (CABMV). The most efficient control of these viruses is via the use of resistant varieties, but few varieties intended for green-grain production are resistant. As such, the aim of this study was to develop and identify superior strains of cowpea in terms of joint resistance to the CPSM and CABM viruses that show characteristics associated with green-grain production. Crosses were carried out in a greenhouse at the Agronomic Institute of Pernambuco (AIP) between the following genotypes: Sempre Verde Salgueiro (susceptible), CNC-0434 (immune to CPSMV) and TVu-966 (resistant to CABMV). From these crosses, fifty F2:5 strains with the Sempre Verde type of grain colouring were selected, their resistance to the viruses assessed in a greenhouse, and their agronomic characteristics for green-grain production evaluated in an experiment at the Experimental Station of the AIP in Belém do São Francisco, Pernambuco. The experimental design was of completely randomised blocks, with three replications. The L300.026, L300.039, L300.040 and L300.049 strains proved to be resistant to both viruses, with a high potential for green-grain production. The Mulamba-Mock selection index facilitated the selection of superior strains that are promising for the future launch of new resistant varieties destined for the production of green grains.

ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

Abstract The objective was to evaluate gas exchange and the leaf area requirement for yield in Cavendish and Gros Michel bananas. The cultivars Grande Naine, Calipso, Bucaneiro, FHIA-17 and FHIA-23, and two production cycles, were arranged in a completely randomized experimental design, in a factorial scheme, with five replicates. For the physiological characteristics, a 5x9x2 factorial arrangement was considered, with cultivars, evaluation periods and reading times. Cultivars Bucaneiro and Calipso require larger leaf area per unit produced and FHIA-23, smaller, which suggests a greater photosynthetic efficiency per leaf unit for FHIA-23, confirmed by the higher masses of bunches and hands and greater numbers of hands and fruits. Gas exchange varies with cultivars, evaluation periods and reading times. Cultivars FHIA-17 and Calipso, Gros Michel type, respectively showed higher photosynthesis and transpiration rates than Grande Naine, Cavendish type. Net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, quantum efficiency of photosynthesis, instantaneous water use efficiency and carboxylation efficiency are higher at 8:00 h than at 14:00 h. The month of June allowed the cultivars to express the highest values of photosynthesis rates, incident radiation on leaves, carboxylation efficiency and stomatal conductance.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar trocas gasosas e requerimento em área foliar para rendimento de bananeiras Cavendish e Gros Michel. As cultivares, Grande Naine, Calipso, Bucaneiro, FHIA-17 e FHIA-23, e dois ciclos de produção foram dispostos em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial, com cinco repetições. Para características fisiológicas, considerou-se arranjo fatorial 5 x 9 x 2, com cinco cultivares, nove períodos de avaliação e dois horários de leituras. As cultivares Bucaneiro e Calipso requerem maior área foliar por unidade produzida, e a FHIA-23, menor, o que sugere maior eficiência fotossintética por unidade de folha para esta, comprovada pelas maiores massas de cachos e de pencas, e maiores quantidades de pencas e frutos. As trocas gasosas variam com as cultivares, épocas de avaliação e horários de leitura. As cultivares FHIA-17 e Calipso, tipo Gros Michel, expressaram, respectivamente, maiores taxa de fotossíntese e de transpiração, que a Grande Naine, tipo Cavendish. A fotossíntese líquida, condutância estomática, e as eficiências quântica da fotossíntese, instantânea de uso da água e de carboxilação são maiores às 8 horas comparada às 14 horas. O mês de junho possibilitou às cultivares expressarem os maiores valores de taxas de fotossíntese, radiação incidente nas folhas, eficiência de carboxilação e condutância estomática.

Abstract Waste generated by mineral extraction is globally associated with environmental disturbances due to its deleterious effect on water resources. However, research focused on the influence of mine tailings resulting from the extraction of semi-precious stones on fluvial systems is still incipient in the environmental literature. From this perspective, this study quantified the average concentrations of major oxides present in the fine fractions of the sediment samples from the Várzea river, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. This region is acknowledged as the largest rock amethyst mining area in the world. Additionally, geochemical indices were established to characterize potential sources of production, maturity, degree of weathering, and sediment pollution. To evaluate the influence of mine tailings on the Várzea river sediments, the contents of Al2O3, Fe2O3, MnO, P2O5, CaO, SiO2, K2O, CuO, ZnO, and TiO2 major oxides present in sediment samples were determined and compared to the local background values; the values varied significantly (p < 0.05), classifying them as polluted and medium polluted. Also, the sediment samples with evident characteristics of extreme chemical weathering consist mainly of clay minerals and mafic igneous rocks, and similarities were found between sediment samples and tailings from the mineral extraction zone. The Principal Component Analysis and the cluster analysis also suggest the existence of three distinct mineral oxide groups, differentiating the zones leaving and upstream the mining zone from the other sampling points.

RESUMO Os rejeitos de atividades de extração mineral são mundialmente associados a distúrbios ambientais devido a sua capacidade de atuação deletéria sobre os recursos hídricos. No entanto, o número de estudos sobre a influência dos rejeitos de zonas de extração de rochas semipreciosas sobre sistemas flúvicos ainda é incipiente na literatura da área ambiental. Nessa perspectiva, foram quantificadas pela técnica de espectrometria de fluorescência de raios-X por dispersão de comprimento de onda as concentrações médias de óxidos minerais majoritários presentes nas frações finas das amostras de sedimentos do Rio da Várzea, Sul do Brasil, maior região mundial extratora de rochas ametista. Somado a isso, avaliou-se a qualidade ambiental e caracterizaram-se as potenciais fontes por meio de índices geoquímicos. Os resultados consideram a provável influência dos rejeitos de mineração sobre os sedimentos do rio da Várzea, classificando-os como não poluído a moderadamente poluído e, quando comparados ao background local, apresentam variâncias significativas (p < 0,05) para os óxidos minerais Al2O3, MnO, CaO, SiO2, K2O e TiO2. Além disso, as amostras de sedimentos que apresentaram características de intemperismo químico extremo são formadas por argilominerais e rochas ígneas máficas, e foram encontradas similaridades entre as amostras de sedimentos e os rejeitos da zona de extração mineral. Conclui-se que os rejeitos de rochas basálticas, acúmulos de fronte aos garimpos, funcionam como fonte de estresse ambiental no sistema hídrico.

ABSTRACT Objective: the aim of this study was to compare the results of open and videolaparoscopic transvesical prostatectomy techniques in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in a tertiary hospital. Methods: we reviewed medical records of patients who underwent transvesical adenectomy due to BPH between March 2019 and March 2021 at the urology service of Hospital de Clínicas do Paraná (HCPR), 42 patients were included in the open transvesical prostatectomy group and 22 in the videolaparoscopic group. Then, a comparison was made between the techniques in terms of surgical time, bleeding, length of stay, need for intensive care, among others, in addition to postoperative outcome. Results: the mean surgical time was shorter in the open technique compared to the laparoscopic technique (141 min vs 274 min). The videolaparoscopic group had a shorter mean hospital stay (3.5 days vs 6.36 days). There was no statistical significance in the comparison regarding the need for an intensive care unit, as well as in the assessment of postoperative bleeding. Conclusion: comparatively, the techniques demonstrated a similar outcome, with a low rate of complications and satisfactory results for the treatment of BPH. The laparoscopic technique is a surgery with a shorter hospital stay, but at the expense of a longer surgical time.

RESUMO Objetivo: o objetivo deste estudo foi comparar o resultado das técnicas de prostatectomia transvesical aberta e videolaparoscópica no tratamento de hiperplasia prostática benigna (HPB) em um hospital terciário. Métodos: foram revisados prontuários de pacientes submetidos a adenectomia transvesical devido a HPB entre março de 2019 a março de 2021 no serviço de urologia do Hospital de Clínicas do Paraná (HCPR), sendo incluídos 42 pacientes no grupo prostatectomia transvesical aberta e 22 no grupo videolaparoscópico. Em seguida foi feita a comparação entre as técnicas nos quesitos tempo cirúrgico, sangramento, tempo de internamento, necessidade de terapia intensiva, entre outras, além de desfecho pós-operatório. Resultados: o tempo cirúrgico médio foi menor na técnica aberta em comparação com a técnica videolaparoscópica (141 min vs 274 min). O grupo videolaparoscópico apresentou um tempo médio de internamento menor (3,5 dias vs 6,36 dias). Não houve significância estatística na comparação quanto a necessidade de unidade de terapia intensiva, assim como na avaliação do sangramento pós-operatório. Conclusão: comparativamente, as técnicas demonstraram um desfecho semelhante, com baixa taxa de complicações e resultados satisfatórios para o tratamento da HPB. Sendo a técnica videolaparoscópica uma cirurgia com menor tempo de internamento, porém às custas de um maior tempo cirúrgico. .

Abstract Objective: To identify oral characteristics found in children with liver disease in programming for liver transplantation. Data source: The methodology was written according to PRISMA-ScR. We adopted the methodological framework and recommendations for this type of review by Arksey and O’Malley and the Joanna Briggs Institute. The protocol was registered in the Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/QCU4W). A systematic search (Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ProQuest) was conducted to identify studies that met the inclusion criteria: systematic reviews; prospective clinical trials (parallel or crossover group designs); observational studies (cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional studies); clinical case series; and case reports evaluating children with liver disease in preparation for transplantation. The last search was conducted in July 2021, and no restrictions were imposed as to language or year of publication. Studies presenting mixed data with post-transplant evaluation, and studies evaluating not only liver transplantation but also other solid organs were excluded. Screening, inclusion, and data extraction were performed by two reviewers independently. A narrative synthesis was conducted to describe the findings of the study. Data synthesis: The bibliographic search identified 830 references. A total of 21 articles were read in their entirety after the inclusion criteria assessment. Finally, after evaluating the exclusion criteria, only 3 studies were considered for the qualitative analysis. Conclusions: Children with liver disease in preparation for transplantation may present enamel defects, tooth pigmentation, caries, gingivitis, and opportunistic infections such as candidiasis.

RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar características bucais em crianças hepatopatas em programação para o transplante hepático. Fontes de dados: A metodologia foi descrita de acordo com o PRISMA-ScR. Adotamos a estrutura metodológica e recomendações para este tipo de revisão por Arksey e O’Malley e o Instituto Joanna Briggs. O protocolo foi registrado no Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/QCU4W). Uma pesquisa sistemática (Medline/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science e ProQuest) foi conduzida para identificar estudos que preenchessem os critérios de inclusão: revisões sistemáticas; ensaios clínicos prospectivos (desenhos de grupos paralelos ou cruzados); estudos observacionais (coorte, caso-controle e estudos transversais); séries de casos clínicos; e relatos de casos que avaliam crianças com doenças hepáticas em preparação para o transplante. A última busca foi conduzida em julho de 2021, e não foram impostas restrições quanto ao idioma ou ano de publicação. Foram excluídos estudos que apresentavam dados mistos com avaliação pós-transplante e estudos que avaliavam não só o transplante de fígado, mas também de outros órgãos sólidos. O rastreio, inclusão e extração de dados foram realizados por dois revisores independentemente. Foi conduzida uma síntese narrativa para identificar os resultados do estudo. Síntese dos dados: A pesquisa bibliográfica identificou 830 referências. Foram lidos 21 artigos na íntegra após avaliação dos critérios de inclusão. Finalmente, após a avaliação dos critérios de exclusão, apenas três estudos foram considerados para análise. Conclusões Crianças com doença hepática em preparação para o transplante podem apresentar defeitos de esmalte, pigmentação dentária, cárie, gengivite além de infecções oportunistas como a candidíase.

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the process of living with HIV/AIDS in the daily life of people living with HIV in its interface with the social representations of spirituality and religiosity. Method: Qualitative research, supported by the theory of social representations. A semi-structured interview was carried out with 32 people undergoing treatment for HIV in an outpatient clinic specialized in HIV/AIDS. Analysis carried out with the support of software IRAMUTEQ. Results: Participants were mostly men, aged over 51 years, Catholic, and living with the virus for more than 10 years. IRAMUTEQ generated three classes, in which the influence of spirituality and religiosity as a promoter of strength to face the infection and the difficulties in the process of coping with the diagnosis was observed, as well as the importance of the support network, and the naturalization of HIV/AIDS. Conclusion: The participants make associations between spirituality and the transcendent and divine; religiosity was anchored to religion and its experience, with both being a source of support and strength. Therefore, it is important to make room for the patient to talk about their spiritual/religious needs.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Describir el proceso de vivir con SIDA en el cotidiano de personas viviendo con VIH en su interfaz con las representaciones sociales de la espiritualidad y de la religiosidad. Método: investigación cualitativa, apoyada por la teoría de las representaciones sociales. Se realizó entrevista semiestructurada con 32 personas en tratamiento para VIH en un ambulatorio especializado en VIH/SIDA. Análisis realizado con soporte del software IRAMUTEQ. Resultados: Los participantes fueron en su mayoría hombres, con edad superior a 51 años, católicos y viviendo con el virus hace más de 10 años. El IRAMUTEQ generó tres clases, en las que se notó la influencia de la espiritualidad y de la religiosidad como promotora de fuerza para el enfrentamiento de la infección. Sino también, las dificultades en el proceso de enfrentamiento del diagnóstico, la importancia de la red de apoyo y la naturalización del VIH/SIDA. Conclusión: Los participantes hacen asociaciones de la espiritualidad al transcendente y al divino, la religiosidad fue ancorada a la religión y a su vivencia, ambas siendo fuente de apoyo y fuerza. Por eso, es importante abrir espacio al paciente hablar sobre su necesidad espiritual/religiosa.

Método: Pesquisa qualitativa, apoiada pela teoria das representações sociais. Realizou-se entrevista semiestruturada com 32 pessoas em tratamento para HIV num ambulatório especializado em HIV/Aids. Análise realizada com suporte do software IRAMUTEQ. Resultados: Os participantes foram em sua maioria homens, com idade superior a 51 anos, católicos e vivendo com o vírus há mais de 10 anos. O IRAMUTEQ gerou três classes. Nestas, viu-se a influência da espiritualidade e da religiosidade como promotora de força para o enfrentamento da infecção, assim como das dificuldades no processo de enfrentamento do diagnóstico, e a importância da rede de apoio e a naturalização do HIV/Aids. Conclusão: Os participantes fazem associações da espiritualidade ao transcendente e ao divino. A religiosidade foi ancorada à religião e à sua vivência, ambas sendo fonte de apoio e força. Por isso, é importante abrir espaço para o paciente falar sobre sua necessidade espiritual/religiosa.

Abstract Genomic selection has transformed the livestock industry, enabling early-life selection of animals. Biopsy sampling of pre-implantation embryos has been described since 1968. However, it was only after 2010, with the advancement of molecular biology techniques such as whole genomic amplification and SNP Chips, that next-generation sequencing became commercially available for bovine embryos. It is now possible to make decisions about which embryos to transfer not only based on recipients’ availability or embryo morphology but also on genomic estimates. This technology can be implemented for a wide spectrum of applications in livestock. In this review, we discuss the use of embryo biopsy for genomic selection and share our experience with Gir and Girolando Brazilian breeding programs, as well as future goals for implementing it in Brazilian bovine in vitro embryo production practices.
